OHSMS Audits
AS/NZS 4801 is the Australian and New Zealand Standard for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. The Standard sets the requirements for establishing and assessing Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems for organisations (Standards, NZ).
An Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) is a system for planning and setting up processes to manage health and safety in your workplace.
Section 44 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 places a due diligence duty on officers (Directors and those holding senior governance positions). An independent audit can provide Officers with comprehensive information on the Health and Safety systems and performance of their organisation, assisting them to fulfil their due diligence duty.
An OHSMS Audit assists PCBU’s to fulfil their due diligence and provides peace of mind for them and Managers. Areas of success and achievement are highlighted along with areas requiring improvement being identified and prioritised for future action.
The Health and Safety Guide: Good Governance for Directors (2016) acknowledges the value of external audits, stating: “It is also good practice for the organisation to periodically seek independent and objective assurance from an external audit and/or system review. An external opinion can bring a fresh pair of eyes and new ways of thinking.” (Institute of Directors & WorkSafe New Zealand, 2016, p26)
